“The FDA is aware of the FDA’s concerns and is still monitoring the situation,” said Steven Hirsch, a spokesman for the FDA’s National Institute on Drug Abuse. “We’re concerned that the FDA’s concerns were overlooked and not properly investigated.”
The FDA’s review found that Diflucan was a “compelling” reason for the recall. But it also found that many of the other brands — including the one that Hirsch recalled — had potentially serious adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal symptoms or allergic reactions.
The FDA also reviewed all of the product lots that were recalled for safety reasons, which included a batch of generic versions of the drug. The FDA also asked manufacturers to explain how they prepared and marketed their products, including diflucan.
